With gardening season just around the corner, now is a great time to take stock of your current supplies, clean your tools and maybe do a little shopping to get yourself ready.
I've compiled a list of 5 garden gizmos that may look a little quirky but are made specifically for the job at hand. A few of them I have tried myself, so I'll give an honest review. Let me know your thoughts in the comments! All of these can be found on Amazon or maybe even your local garden center. (Please note that as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.)
1. Claw Gardening Gloves
Claw Gardening Gloves |
These creepy looking gardening gloves work as a 2 in 1 product. The strong plastic "claws" and puncture-resistant cloth both protect your hands and make your fingers stronger and "tool-like" for various garden tasks. Use them for raking out leaves from the garden bed, digging up weeds and digging holes for planting. No additional tools needed!
I have a pair of these and I use them a lot for work around the base of shrubs to clear out the leaves and debris. I also use them to scratch the surface before I sow tiny seeds who like to be sown on the soil surface.
2. CobraHead® Original Weeder & Cultivator
I was recently introduced to this ingenious tool at a conference last year and met the CobraHead owners who provided a demonstration. I was hooked (no pun intended) instantly!
This tool weeds, digs, cultivates and plants all with a comfortable, ergonomic handle made for both right and left handed people. The curved head can get through any soil - even tough lawn grass! I've also personally used it for digging up large, shallow rooted plants that need dividing (like hostas or japanese forest grass). It's great at digging out weeds in narrow spaces, making planting holes in tough soil and is perfect for in between rows of vegetables. This took comes in a mini size (8" long) and an original size (13" long).
3. Outdoor Leaf Bag Holder
Outdoor Leaf Bag Holder |
How many times have you been weeding or picking up leaves and your garbage bag is laying flat on the ground next to you? If you are anything like me, it's quite often. This bag holder comes with 4 small clips to clip the leaf bags to the metal holder frame which prevents the bag from blowing away or slipping off. Not only that - this also keeps the bag open which is very helpful when doing yard work and your hands are full of yard waste.
4. Gardening Sleeves for Women
Gardening Sleeves |
These gardening sleeves come in a variety of colors and styles and protect your arms from sun and scratches. They are made of a soft, breathable material that keeps you cool during the summer. The thumb hole helps keep the sleeve in place and an anti-slide band around your biceps ensures it will not slip down your arm. These could be quite useful when working with roses and other shrubs. Personally, my arms are constantly getting scratches and cuts, so these could really come in handy! Plus, I love the design!
5. Garden Kneeler/Seat Bench - with Umbrella!
Garden Kneeler/Seat Bench |
This is an all-in-one garden kneeler and seat, designed to provide less strain on your back, neck and knees. Sit on it as a bench seat, or flip it over to kneel on the soft foam pad and use the handles for extra support getting up or down. Also included: a small folding table for "keeping your drinks and cell phone off the ground", a potting mat for planting and weeding, as well as a handy tool organizer attached to the side. The detachable sun shade umbrella protects you from the hot summer sun. While I do not have this tool, I think its a great idea and honestly, has everything one could want when heading into the garden. Please note, the website cites "Perfect tool for a gnome." HUH?? It's much too big for a gnome!
So there you have it! 5 quirky, garden gadgets and gizmos to get you ready for gardening season. I'll be posting another series next month. Until then, let me know if you end up trying one of these and what you think! Either leave a comment below or email me at kate@kwgardensandflowers.com
Happy Gardening!
